El jove rus Danila (encarnat per Serguei Bodrov Jr., fill del cineasta homònim i mort prematurament en 2002) torna a casa després de passar dos anys en el servei militar i descobreix que el seu germà Viktor s'ha convertit en un assassí a sou per a la màfia russa de Sant Petersburg.
