Edat Mitjana, segle XII. Inspirada al relat homònim d'Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849). Mentre una plaga devastadora -coneguda com la Mort Roja- delma la població d'una petita província italiana, el sàdic i excèntric príncep Pròsper es tanca amb els amics en una de les propietats fortificades per evitar el contagi. Per evadir-se de la tragèdia, decideix organitzar una festa de màscares, en què sotmet els convidats a tota mena de jocs depravats, dels quals només en podran sortir indemnes dos innocents.
