El 1962, tres soldats procedents d'un experiment genètic finançat pels soviètics, van assassinar tot el personal d'una base de l'Àrtic i van desaparèixer a la tundra. Cinquanta anys més tard, una expedició dirigida per Andrew Malraux, un científic que té un lligam sentimental amb els fets de 1962, es proposa localitzar els soldats modificats genèticament amb un objectiu incert. En realitat, l'expedició és una tapadora perquè una companyia petroliera pugui fer una prospecció a la zona.
