El fracassat guionista de Hollywood Steven Schats (Matthew Broderick) viu amb l'esperança que l'acceptin un guió, però s'ha de conformar amb un treball de taquiller al Teatre Xinès. Tot i això, un dia, després que el seu guió hagi estat rebutjat mil vegades, troba un productor (Baldwin) que s'interessa per ell.
