George Bynum, un pacient del psiquiatre de Manhattan Dr. Sam Rice (Roy Scheider), és brutalment assassinat. Poc després, el doctor Rice rep la visita d?un company de treball de Bynum i el seu amant Brooke Reynolds (Meryl Streep), a més del detectiu Vitucci, a càrrec de la investigació.
