Irlanda, 1905. Una parella de firaires, l’Angus i la Lily, arriben a un poble de la costa oferint un espectacle centrat en l’exhibició de falses criatures fantàstiques. Allà coneixen un ancià que els confessa haver capturat una autèntica sirena que ha mantingut oculta a casa seva. Fascinats i desconfiats alhora, descobreixen que la sirena existeix de debò. L’Angus i els seus companys decideixen apropiar-se de la criatura per obtenir-ne fama i diners. Mentre naveguen en direcció a Amèrica, l’entusiasme inicial es transforma en un malson quan la sirena revela la seva naturalesa inquietant i els poders que exerceix sobre els humans.
