Quan la companyia Heath & Morton s'enriqueix gràcies al doctor Carruthers, aquest no se sent prou recompensat i decideix venjar-se dels amos del negoci familiar. Per fer-ho, farà ús d'un ratpenat al qual ha aconseguit, mitjançant impulsos elèctrics, fer assolir dimensions gegantines, i que guarda al laboratori. El ratpenat ha estat entrenat per atacar quan percep l'olor d'un perfum que el mateix doctor ha produït i es va encarregant de subministrar les futures víctimes.
