Un equip de bombarders de la R.A.F., obligats a aterrar a Alemanya després d'una victoriosa incursió, intenten tornar a Anglaterra travessant el cor de Berlín. Però la Gestapo els persegueix implacablement pels camps de presoners, els trens-hospital i les fàbriques de municions. Els cinc fugitius, en l'intent d'assolir la frontera holandesa i recuperar la llibertat, deixen al seu pas un rastre de mort i destrucció.
