Jennie és una jove i sorda fugitiva que acaba d'arribar a San Francisco per trobar el seu germà perdut fa temps, un barbut i misteriós escultor conegut a la ciutat com The Seeker. A San Francisco, fa amistat amb la banda psicodèlica Mumblin´Jim, els membres del qual inclouen Stony (un Jack Nicholson de pèl llarg i cua de cavall), Ben (Adam Roarke) i Elwood (Max Julien), amants de la pau, el amor lliure i les drogues.
