París, dècada de 1950. Una jove amb un elegant vestit de nit apareix morta al mig d'una plaça. El cèlebre inspector Jules Maigret s'encarrega d'investigar-ho, però resulta impossible identificar la víctima perquè ningú sembla conèixer-la ni recordar-la. Durant les indagacions, Maigret coincideix amb una jove delinqüent amb una semblança sorprenent amb la víctima. El cas li desperta el record d'una altra desaparició més antiga i íntima.
