L'any 2200, una expedició liderada pel comandant Adams arriba al planeta Altair-4, a fi d'esbrinar què va ocórrer amb els components d'una anterior missió. Allí troben els seus únics supervivents, el Dr. Morbius, que ha viscut 20 anys investigant els avenços científics d'una raça que va habitar el planeta, i la seva filla Altaira. Malgrat les advertències del científic, els tripulants decideixen hostatjar-se en l'estrany planeta. Aviat comencen a succeir inquietants esdeveniments. El comandant Adams i els seus homes sospiten del Dr. Morbius. No estan massa equivocats...
